meine beschaeftigung...

... die letzten paar tage: ca. 60 papers lesen und daraus ein geruest fuer eine arbeit ueber metamaterials bauen. prinzipiell ja eine ganz interessante sache, aber 60 papers lesen, irgendwie festhalten um was es geht (ein hoch auf mindmaps! - oder weiss wer noch eine bessere idee?) und in ein bibtechfile eintragen is halt ein wenig fad wenn es alles ist was man macht

Fuksisitsit - tiistaina

Gestern war Fuksisitsit - die Dinnerparty fyr die Erstsemestrigen. Begonnen hat das ganze um 18 Uhr mit Sitsitkoulu (Sitsitschule), einem kurzen Vortrag in einem Hoersahl uber das Verhalten auf einem Sitsit sowie einen kurzen Ryckblick auf seine Geschichte.

In Taeffae, dem Gebaeude der schwedischsprachigen Studentenvertretung ist auch eine Mensa. Dort hat das Sitsit stattgefunden.

wobei m links von w einschenkt und den Sessel zurechtruckt, ... gegenueber sollte die Person sein, mit der man auf das Sitsit geht.
Getrunken wird meistens nach einem Lied, dabei wird nicht angestossen, sondern zuerst (w) links, dann rechts und dann gegenueber hoeflich zugenickt (m zuerst rechts, dann links). Jeder kann ein Lied starten - dazu steigt man auf seinen Sessel, stellt sich kurz vor (und wird von allen begruesst) und erzaehlt irgendwas auf finnisch um dann die nummer anzukuendigen und alle singen dann mit.
Zu Essen hats gegeben ein Meeresfruchtirgendwas auf Roggenbrot, als Hauptgericht 2 Stunden spaeter Spinat/Erdapfeltartare mit Roastbeef (?) und noch 1 Stunde spaeter als Nachspeise einen Beerenkuchen mit Schlag und Punssi oder Jallo (beides harter Alkohol).
Als Rahmenprogramm hatten wir einen 4 Personen Maennerchor, der unter anderem ein Lied mit dem Gefuehl von Requiem mit der Textzeile 'Koskenkorva' vorggetragen hat. Danach war irgendwann das 'Speksi', die eine Vorstellung des Theaters gegeben haben. Allerdings unter Einbindung des Publikums wie immer hier - jeder im Publikum kann irgendetwas schreiben, was die Schauspieler ins Spiel einbinden muessen. Unterbrochen wurde das ganze immer wieder von musikalischen Einlagen.
Die letzte Einlage war von 'Humpa konserti(?)', die eine Mischung aus Brassband, Blasmusik und Humpaband sind. Ziemlich coole Sache das ganze, gute Musik und so. Und voller Showeinlagen wie brennender Gitarren, ...
Das ganze muss man sich dann noch so vorstellen, dass alle Burschen in Anzug mit Hemd und Kravatte (und falls vorhanden Hut) kommen; die Maedels waren zum Grossteil in Abendkleidung da, fast schon Ballgeeignet. Das gibt ein sehr huebsches Bild beim Sitsit.
Geendet hat das ganze zuerst mit einer Afterparty im Taeffae bei DJ und Lightshow und der Teekkari-Hymni um Mitternacht sowie der Saehkoe-Hymni danach. Irgendwann spaeter gabs eine weitere Afterparty in der (nichtfunktionierenden) Sauna in Jaemeraentaival.

time goes by...

A lot has happened since the last real entry:

Last thursday was Stadisuunistus, which is Orienteering in Helsinki (=Stadi). We met in Senaatintori in our Overalls and after some warm up training guided by the Fuksikapteenit of all guilds we went of on our 'exercises'. Our group was built out of internationals only but we had loads of fun.Things we had to do included organising a demonstration and collecting signatures for that (more sun in wintertime!), show leadership to a human dog, build human pyramids and other Geschicklichkeitsspiele, open a bottle of bear creatively, do a mortal combat replay, build a bridge and solve puzzles, catch the christmas pig, ...
After about 4 hours of walking through Helsinki we have filled our paper with points and went to macky for a break (wo i aussagfundn hob, dass si mei geldboersl verduennisiert hot). Afterwards we dispersed instead of going to the afterparty.
Friday I spent in my classes and doing the first bureaucracy round to request and lock all kinds of stuff and met with Kerstin in the evening. Saturday and Sunday were quite quiet, except from a short excursion to Suomenlinna with the other internationals.

Monday also was busy with lectures and I got some books from the library, which meant I didn't get a lot of sleep. I'm reading the Canterbury Tales in their original language now and some poems by William Blake.
And I also registered for the Fuksisitsit and a trip to Russia. The first one has already been approved, for the second approval I'm still waiting.
Tuesday after Finnish class I went to my guilds room to get a new Fuksipistekortti and get a 'Songbook' with all kinds of finnish and swedish songs. One of the guilds members (Joel) explained the basic meaning to me while I was trying to translate them with the Finnish I already knew. With some others we went to lunch afterwards and I found out about FXQ - which is a trip for the fuksit to Stockholm in November. The registration for that started (and ended) on thursday in the morning and there is quite a fuss about the registration: We met before 6 pm in the guild room to put our name on the list. At half past six we made a change of location to OK20 where we discussed our freshmanparty Oikosulku (kurzschluss) which will be organised by the fuksit themselves (which is actually a quite good idea). After electing the 'leading council' we went to Ossinlammi which is the little pond in front of Sähkö. There we spent the rest of the night drinking, singing, talking and watching the ISOt and some others of the vanha having a sitsit. By now I already know quite some people from seeing and I even remember some of the names. The excursion will be quite nice, I think. There are even a lot of people who can speak a little bit of German and all were quite astonished about my Finnish ;) At 8 o'clock in the morning queuing (which more or less happened by reading out all the names on the list every 15 minutes) was finished and we put our contact details on another list. So it came to pass, that I spent my first whole night outside in Finland in a cold (and sometimes rainy) September night with an all Finnish group of students as the only exchange student.

Now I just was at a departmental presentation session of Power Electronics and the like, where it turned out that my power electronics prof and one from 'Energieversorgung' can speak German quite ok and also that the second guy knows Brauner where we had our 'Energieversorgung'slecture. Die Welt is ein Dorf, wirklich.
In zwei Wochen kommt ein Prof aus Graz, der über Netzstabilität und solche Dinge referiert für 2 Monate als guestlecturer. Vielleicht geb ichs mir, mal schauen.

helsinki heisst bei uns auf der tkk nicht helsinki, sondern 'östliche hafenstadt' (Itäinen satamakaupunki) ;)

Shopping Center in Finnland

Shopping Center do san a gaunz a komische Soche - Sello in Leppävaara is so mehr oder weniger des, wos ma bei uns drunter so kennt, wo's afoch jede menge gschäfte gibt mit an food court in da mittn u wo ma sie hoibwegs woifühln kaun.
Tapiola hingegn is a gaunz a aundare gschicht. Tapiola hot jo den Beinaum 'Gartenstadt', weils voi im Grünen liegt (also mehr vy goartn herumbaut ois in da pampa). u es is im wesentlichen a stockmann/sokos (2 fette finnische department stores wo ma wirkli olles kriegt wos ma se so vorstölln kaun) departmentstores. und daun gibts yberm street-level a oart einkaufsdorf, oba irgendwie voi vastraht. do gehst amoi um de eckn u es schaut wieda gaunz aundas aus; es wirkt ois a bissi unkonzentriert, wie wauns ned gaunz gwisst hättn, ob des so geht wos sa se do vorstölln. u obwois eigentli mehr oda weniga in da stodt is, is durt nix sunst aussa an schwimbod und an kulturzentrum. i glaub wos so komisch wirkt is, dass es ned wirklich a zentrum is/hot.

Kamppi is jo a so ähnlich. obgesehn davon, dass es untn drinnen vo shoppingcenter nahtlos in den flughofen ähnlichn busbahnhof ybergeht, is es durch de bauort ned wirklich zentrumsmässig (oba in dem foi is des evtunell sogor obsicht). in kamppi kaun ma naemli so hoch auffigeh wia ma wy, ma kimmt trotzdem nu ebnerdig aussi. innen hots auf jedm level irgendwie nur voi weng shops, u vy klane, wos a irgendwie eigenortig is. oba durch des ebenerdige mocht des ned-zentrum-sei viell doch sinn, weils so dadurch an die umgebung offn is.

Conclusio: fia mi san de meistn finnischn einkaufszentren a bissi inkonsistent, oba i find zumindest wos i wy
Anmerkung: es gibt voi vy nähgschäftln und stoffgschäftln do, ohne dass i bsunders gschaut hob, wissat i zumindest 4, davon san olle in irgendana ort vo einkaufszentrum. u tlw. gibts des zeig sogor in so sochn wia anttila, prisma oder wos auch immer (de kau ma si so in etwa wie in metro oder in walmart vorstelln, nur a bissi klana oba vom sortiment her ähnli)

bowlen, grillen und champagner - ein wochenende in helsinki

Sa hot des gaunze augfaungt mit bowlen. urspruengli woar nur unsrige tutgruppe dabei und a aundare. im endeffekt san daun so um die 30 leut auftaucht mit denen wir vo kamppi (der supertollen busstation mit flughafenfeeling) noch kallio gfohrn san wo de bowlingbaun is. i hob mit 5 spanier und an schweizer gspielt, war ziemlich cool. i glaub jo, des wor mehr so wos wia diskobowling, weil olles so huebsch blau wor ;)
nochha is a teil der leut diverse laendermatches anschaun gangen; aber mein part der gruppe is in ein beisl in kallio um bier zu trinken und zu plaudern. des beisl is jo a a gaunz aundare gschicht ;) 'Roskapankki' hoast des, und ma kriegt 'yks tuoppi' (eine finnische pint, 0.4l) um 2e was a occasion fia de finnischen preise is. noch an fizu (wodka mit fishermens friends) hamma noch an lakrizeschnaps trunken waehrend dem auf den bus warten.
fizu is ja recht gut, schmeckt recht minzig u so. aber wenn ma so wie i ned sondali a freund vo lakrize is, is des andere zeugs trinkboar oba ned berauschend.
dann noch die stockholm diskothek besucht, huebscher innen als onnela weil ned gaunz so rot pluesch goldig, aber viel mehr eintritt (im vagleich zu 0e is olles vue). Und abgschlossn mit an klanen snack u mehr plaudern bei pasi (wiedara tutor, oba ned meiniga), der a in otaniemi wohnt. wie i ham bin, woars hoiwa siewane in da fruh u scho wieda hell.

so war dann recht gmiatli wei eh olle gschlofn haum, war am spotn nochmittag mitm radl in seurasaari grillen mit kerstin, joe (sbg/krtn) u de franzosn. huebsch wars dort, oba a bissi koit. auf'd nocht nu mei toschn vom pasi ghoit u daun iptv grichtet bei meim tutor ;)

mo wor i im wesentlichen auf da uni. di hot moi mitn finnisch kurs angfangt und dann viel pause wo i bisl fia mei paper researched hob. der space kurs den i moch, der hot leida nu ned angfangt, des is oba nirgends gstaundn, deswegn haum ma daun am institut vorbeigschaut ;)
hot oba an grossn vorteil ghobt - ana vo da TU is derzeit grod do auf ana Konferenz, jetzt hob i mi mit eam im bakers in helsinki auf an zwoa viele 'sparkling wine's treffn kennan. de gibts durt jedn di um 1e/glas. nochand waradns nu wohi essn gaunga, oba wie des erste lokal zu voi gwesn is, hob i mi zur kerstin obgsetzt.

mi hob i unifrei :) wor i mitm joni essn u daun in leppävaara im sello einkaufn. jetzt bin i besitzerin eiens wasserkochers und neuer passender schuhe *freu*
auf'd nocht wor ma daun des match finnland-polen anschaun, leider is es 0:0 ausgangen. anyway, danach noch a bissi kallio angschaut und wieda a hübsches lokal gfundn, desmoi mit musikquizz und voi gmiatli drinnen. vo draussn hots jo a bissl voi vadächtig u obweisnd gwirkt.

heit werd i ws stadisuunistus geh (wer aufpasst hot - suunistus is orienteering, stadi is da naum vo de helsinger fia helsinki), wo glaub i olle unsare fuksit (erstsemestrige) durch stadi rennan u lustige dinge tun. werd ma nu a poar internationals suchn dafia, damit i ned de anzige bin, de ka finnisch vasteht ;)

sweet summer night ...

well, summer night is relative, as it is already quite cold outside during the night. But a lot has happened in the last few days:
Tuesday and Wednesday we had our orientation day which was not very informative for me as most of the stuff i already knew. But still it was nice to get to know some people. Also I got my computer account so I will be able to access my new e-mail and the university computers 24/7.
Tuesday evening there was also the ESN welcome evening party at Onnela where everybody was meeting up and the place got quite crowded :) Wednesday evening we went to Otasuunistus which is 'Otaniemi Orienteering'. There you walk around Campus and visit stations organised by the different organisations and clubs present on campus. There is for example a car repairing one who owns a kind of VW Bus built into a drive able wood sauna!There are also a lot of singing clubs, a metal club, a digital media one, one to rid the world of alcohol, ... At every station you had to do something to get some points - like talk in the sauna and then build some car part out of plastilin which the others have to guess. Or sing an Austrian drinking song,...
Afterwards there was a party at Servinmökki where almost everybody turned up in their overalls (pics will be up soon from that!).

Thursday was the departmental orientation day (apart from getting to know where people are from) which was not very interesting. Anyway, in the afternoon there was the 'inofficial' part of the opening ceremony of university (i haven't been to the official one as all the speeches are in finnish) where 3 bands where performing in between to some action taking place: There was a rope pulling exercise between the rector of TKK (my university) with his board and the board of the TKY (student union). The students won. The second one was the huge rope pulling event of kone - sähkö (maschbau - etechnik) where we did not exactly win. Anyway, the whole area around the pond where this was taking place in the middle of a picnic under some light rain from time to time was filled with people in overalls having all colours. The picture is quite nice - having university buildings all around you and sitting on a nice green meadow next to a small pond in the middle of nature :)
At seven there was also a ESN welcome Sauna Party Evening at Rantasauna with swimming in the sea, there were a lot of people, also exchange students from university of helsinki. Afterwards I have also been to the party at Smökki, where the band 'Plastic Indians' was performing. It was quite nice, I more or less sang the TKK song for the first time and met some German guy and a finnish one from kone with whom i talked quite long after dancing stopped.

Songs are something special here - everybody is singing and there are special songs for everything. Sähkö for example has their own little song, it goes like this:

This song is also printed on every overall. We performed it also for the rope pulling together with some other stuff. So thats more or less the collection of the last few days

going out

Am Freitag bei Soila gewesen und mit ihr, Joni, einem Italiener einem Spanier, einem Bayer und 2 Franzosen zuerst bei ihr gemuetlich bissi essen und komische Dinge trinken (Wodka mit Cassis und Sprite; Brantwein mit Mineral) und dann nach Helsinki rein Beisl anschaun. Des erste Mal mit dem Nachtbus heimgefahren :)

Samstag Apfelstrudel gemacht und mit Kerstin aufm Balkon gegessen. Sie hat Schnaps mitgebracht, dann is noch Stevan vorbeikommen. Nachher noch im Molly Malones gewesen - nettes Irishpub mit Livemusic.

Morgens nettes Gespraech gehabt :) Und heut abend nu sauna gwesn :)

also meine tägliche Dosis Regen am Nachmittag bei strahlendem Sonnenschein und blauem Himmel am Vormittag bin ich ja schon gewöhnt, aber Hagel ist doch was neues.

fireworks competition

Helsinki is schon eine geile Stadt. Gestern Freitag war um 22:30 Ortszeit die finnische Feuerwerksmeisterschaft angesetzt. 5 Teams/Leute/? sind angetreten mit einer jeweils ca. 7 Minuten langen Show.
Ich muss sagen, so orchestrierte Feuerwerke koennen schon was! Stattgefunden hat das ganze ausserdem am Töölönlahti, einem See, der eigentlich eine Meeresbucht ist. Dadurch konnten 2erlei Arten von Feuerwerkskoerpern verwendet werden, die hohen die man bei uns hauptsaechlich kennt und welche die von unten raufgehen. Sehr hübsch alles miteinander :) Nur saukalt wars draussen und trotzdem wars voll. Im Vorfeld hats geheissen, dass 100.000 Leute erwartet werden, mal schaun ob ich rausfinden kann, wieviele es wirklich waren.

Feuerwerke zu beschreiben ist ja jetzt nicht meine Stärke, aber hier und hier und auch hier kann man sich einen kleinen Eindruck verschaffen wie die mit Symmetrie und anderen Dingen gespielt haben. Manche Raketen hab ich noch nie vorher gesehen!
